GE Vernova Powers Up Major Natural Gas Plant in Brazil

Eneva and GE Vernova have commenced commercial operation of the 295 MW Azulão I thermal power plant located in Silves, Brazil. The facility integrates heavy-duty gas generation technology with electrical filtering systems to deliver dispatchable power and frequency regulation to Brazil’s National Interconnected System (SIN).

Grid Integration and Electrical Protection
The facility operates on a Reservoir-to-Wire model, converting extracted natural gas directly into electric power at the production site. Output is fed into the 1,850-kilometer Tucuruí-Macapá-Manaus high-voltage transmission corridor. To address electrical dynamic risks along this extended transmission infrastructure, the installation incorporates a custom Sub Synchronous Resonance (SSR) blocking filter paired with a torsional stress relay. This mechanism prevents sub-synchronous torsional interactions, protecting the turbine-generator shaft line from fatigue while maintaining transmission corridor stability.

Generation Architecture and Dispatch Balancing
The primary power train comprises a 7HA.02 gas turbine paired with an H65 generator. The system provides rapid load-following capability designed to offset fluctuations introduced by variable renewable generation sources, including regional solar and wind assets. Contracted to provide 295 MW over a 15-year period, the unit provides dispatchable baseline and peaking capacity to support grid stability as the share of non-synchronous generation expands.

Operational Role and Maintenance Framework
To ensure operational availability, GE Vernova oversees plant maintenance under a 15-year service agreement covering scheduled inspections, component management, and local engineering support. Azulão I represents the initial operational asset of the broader Azulão Complex, designed to reinforce regional energy security through dedicated field-level thermal conversion.
