Integrated Photovoltaic Systems Optimize Utility Scale Energy Yields

Norsol, TrinaTracker, and Trinasolar collaborated to deploy engineered photovoltaic systems for utility scale solar infrastructure in Spain. The cooperation focused on combining dynamic tracking hardware with high-efficiency n-type modules to optimize energy capture and simplify site installation. The integration was applied across the Villacé I and Villacé II power plants in León, Spain, reaching a combined capacity exceeding 20 MW and entering commercial operation in July 2026.

Technical Challenge and Strategic Collaboration
Utility scale photovoltaic plants require spatial optimization and high specific energy yield to ensure asset viability. Irregular site topography and variable ground conditions often degrade mechanical layout density and increase structural installation complexity.

To resolve these technical constraints, developer Norsol partnered with TrinaTracker, the solar tracking division of Trinasolar, and module manufacturer Trinasolar. The project demanded a unified mechanical and electrical engineering approach to optimize ground coverage ratios while ensuring structural stability under local environmental loads.

System Architecture and Structural Design
The technical deployment utilizes Vanguard 1P single-axis tracking systems integrated with Vertex N high-efficiency photovoltaic modules. The Vanguard 1P system operates on a single portrait module orientation per tracker tube, utilizing dynamic tracking algorithms to align panel surfaces with real-time solar positioning.

TrinaTracker customized the tracker configurations to match specific site contours. This minimized land consumption without altering civil engineering requirements. The design incorporates standardized mechanical interfaces to streamline torque-tube mounting and electrical cabling with the Vertex N module architecture.

Engineering Integration and Project Execution
Implementation involved joint engineering and on-site technical support. TrinaTracker provided structural alignment verification, drive-system calibration, and commissioning support alongside Norsol’s installation teams.

The integration between the tracking system and photovoltaic modules has enabled us to optimize energy production while ensuring a reliable, high-performance solution for both projects, said Raúl Martínez, Project Supervisor, Norsol.

Integrated hardware design reduced alignment errors during installation, accelerating structural assembly and connection phases.

Operational Performance and System Impact
The combined system architecture optimizes specific generation per land unit, expanding total output for the 20 MW site footprint. The structural alignment of Vanguard 1P trackers reduces mechanical stresses on the Vertex N module frames during angular movement, mitigating long-term micro-cracking risks.

Villacé I and Villacé II demonstrate how combining TrinaTracker's advanced tracking technology with Trinasolar's high-efficiency modules can optimize project performance while simplifying execution and supporting long-term operational success, said Gonzalo Baselga, Head of TrinaTracker Europe.

By aligning tracking kinematics with module electrical characteristics, the site achieves higher uptime, predictable power curves, and lower ongoing maintenance requirements across its operational lifetime.
