ABB has significantly reduced operational greenhouse gas emissions at its Bella Vista electrification manufacturing plant in Tucumán province, Argentina, by integrating renewable electricity, electrification technologies, and digital energy management systems. The initiative demonstrates how industrial facilities can combine energy efficiency, automation, and real-time monitoring to reduce emissions while maintaining operational performance in low-voltage equipment manufacturing.
Industrial Electrification and Energy Optimization in Manufacturing
Industrial manufacturing facilities face increasing pressure to reduce emissions while maintaining production reliability. ABB’s Bella Vista plant illustrates how electrification and digital monitoring technologies can support low-carbon manufacturing operations without compromising industrial productivity.
Operating for more than five decades, the Bella Vista site manufactures low-voltage electrical components including miniature circuit breakers (MCBs), residual current devices (RCDs), contactors, and capacitors. These components are widely used across Latin American electrical infrastructure to protect circuits, stabilize power networks, and control electrical loads in industrial and commercial installations.
The facility employs more than 150 workers and serves regional markets through the production of electrical protection and control technologies designed to improve power system reliability and operational safety.
Emissions Reduction Through Renewable Energy Integration
The plant has reduced operational greenhouse gas emissions by 97 percent compared with its 2019 baseline, measured in carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e). In 2024, this reduction corresponded to 530 tons of CO₂e avoided, roughly equivalent to the annual emissions of approximately 115 petrol-powered passenger vehicles.
The emissions reduction was achieved primarily through a transition to 100 percent renewable electricity. Approximately 15 percent of the plant’s electricity demand is supplied by on-site solar photovoltaic generation, while the remaining 85 percent is sourced from the grid using I-REC certified renewable electricity.
The elimination of fossil fuel use from daily operations, combined with energy-efficient equipment and electrified internal systems, has enabled the facility to maintain production performance while reducing its carbon footprint.
Electrification of Industrial Operations
Beyond energy sourcing, electrification has been applied across several operational domains within the facility. The plant has transitioned to full electromobility, deploying electric vehicles for internal logistics and delivery operations alongside dedicated on-site charging infrastructure.
Inside the facility, energy demand is further reduced through high-efficiency IE4 electric motors and plant-wide LED lighting systems, which decrease electricity consumption while maintaining industrial lighting and equipment performance requirements.
These measures contribute to lower energy intensity and support the facility’s long-term decarbonization strategy.
Digital Energy Management and Operational Visibility
Energy consumption at the Bella Vista plant is continuously monitored through a digital energy management platform supported by advanced analytics and AI-based monitoring systems. These tools provide real-time visibility into energy use across production processes and facility infrastructure.
By integrating digital monitoring with operational decision-making, the plant can identify inefficiencies, optimize load management, and adjust energy use dynamically. Such systems are increasingly used in industrial facilities as part of broader digital energy management strategies, enabling manufacturers to improve both sustainability metrics and operational efficiency.
Certified Energy Management and Industrial Standards
The plant has maintained ISO 50001 certification for energy management since 2013, making it an early adopter of structured energy management systems within Argentina’s manufacturing sector.
In addition, the facility operates under several internationally recognized management standards:
- ISO 9001 for quality management
- ISO 14001 for environmental management
- ISO 45001 for occupational health and safety
These standards provide operational frameworks for continuous improvement in manufacturing quality, environmental performance, and worker safety.
Waste Reduction and Circular Resource Management
Environmental performance improvements extend beyond energy use. Through its Zero Waste to Landfill program, the Bella Vista site diverts approximately 91 percent of its waste from landfill, equivalent to the majority of the facility’s 27 tons of annual waste generation.
Waste streams are monitored using performance indicators that allow the site to track recycling, recovery, and disposal processes, supporting continuous improvement in resource management.
Role in ABB’s Mission to Zero Industrial Network
The Bella Vista facility is part of ABB’s global Mission to Zero program, which aims to demonstrate how industrial sites can combine electrification, automation, and digital technologies to reduce environmental impact.
With this milestone, the plant joins nearly 40 ABB manufacturing facilities worldwide that have achieved similar operational sustainability targets. These sites operate across Europe, Asia, and the Americas and collectively demonstrate how industrial electrification and digital energy systems can support low-carbon manufacturing.
Future improvements at the Bella Vista site include enhanced building insulation and the deployment of more autonomous energy management capabilities to further optimize energy performance and operational resilience.
