Statkraft has approved the investment in the Gran Sul onshore wind project in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, adding 280 MW of renewable electricity generation capacity to its Brazilian portfolio. The project supports the company's strategy of expanding wind, hydropower and solar generation in one of its key international markets.
Development of the Gran Sul Project
The Gran Sul wind project is located in Santa Vitória do Palmar in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, an area recognized for its favourable wind conditions. Once operational, the facility will contribute additional renewable electricity to Brazil's power system while strengthening Statkraft's generation portfolio in the country.
The project has completed the required technical studies, environmental assessments and regulatory approval processes. Following the investment decision, the project will enter the execution phase, with construction scheduled to begin in January 2027.
Renewable Energy Strategy
Statkraft identified Brazil as one of its priority international markets for renewable energy development. The company's portfolio combines hydropower, wind power and solar power to diversify electricity generation and support the country's evolving energy mix.
Fernando de Lapuerta, Executive Vice President International at Statkraft, said:"Brazil is an important market for Statkraft. Gran Sul fits well with our strategy to build scale in selected markets and develop a competitive renewable energy portfolio. In Brazil, we combine hydropower, wind power and solar power to deliver reliable and competitive energy solutions that support the energy transition."
Regional and Market Impact
According to Statkraft, the investment will strengthen its operational presence in Rio Grande do Sul while supporting regional economic activity through construction employment, local procurement and long-term infrastructure investment. The additional wind generation capacity is also expected to contribute to the reliability and competitiveness of Brazil's electricity system.
Thiago Tomazzoli, Country Manager Brazil at Statkraft, said:"Gran Sul is an important step in Statkraft's growth strategy in Brazil. The investment decision reflects our confidence in the Brazilian market and helps utilize the good wind resources in the country. The project will contribute to a more secure, competitive and sustainable power system."
Statkraft's Operations in Brazil
Statkraft has operated in Brazil since 2008 and employs more than 300 people in the country. The company currently operates 16 hydropower plants, 33 wind farms and 12 solar power plants that are either operational or under construction, representing more than 2,400 MW of installed capacity.
Following the acquisition of Enerfin in 2023, Statkraft became one of Brazil's ten largest wind power producers. Its largest wind asset is the Santa Eugênia complex in Bahia, which comprises 14 wind farms with a combined installed capacity of 519 MW. Brazil is Statkraft's second-largest power generation market after Norway, producing approximately 5.9 TWh of electricity annually.
