In the aviation and renewable fuels sector, scaling sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production is critical to meeting European decarbonization targets. Technip Energies has been awarded a substantial[1] Engineering, Procurement, Construction and Commissioning (EPCC) contract by SkyNRG for the DSL-01 SAF production facility in Delfzijl, the Netherlands.
The contract follows the successful completion of the Front-End Engineering & Design (FEED) phase and moves the project into full execution. DSL-01 is designed as Europe’s first standalone greenfield SAF plant, with an annual production capacity of 100,000 tons.
HEFA-Based SAF Production at Industrial Scale
The facility will produce SAF via the Hydroprocessed Esters and Fatty Acids (HEFA) pathway, processing sustainable waste feedstocks such as used cooking oil. The HEFA route is currently the most mature SAF production technology and is widely deployed in commercial-scale facilities.
By focusing on waste-derived feedstocks, the plant is structured to support lifecycle emission reductions compared with conventional jet fuel, while aligning with European renewable energy and aviation mandates.
Integrated Hydrogen and Pre-Treatment Infrastructure
A key technical element of the DSL-01 configuration is the integration of an advanced feedstock pre-treatment unit alongside an on-site hydrogen plant. The hydrogen unit will be based on Technip Energies’ proprietary Steam Methane Reforming (SMR) technology.
This integrated design approach supports process efficiency by ensuring feedstock quality control and reliable hydrogen supply—both critical parameters in HEFA production. Co-locating hydrogen generation within the facility can also contribute to operational cost optimization and improved process integration.
Expanding European SAF Capacity
This project represents Technip Energies’ sixth HEFA-based SAF project in Europe. According to the company, it has delivered more than 60% of the installed SAF production capacity globally. The DSL-01 award strengthens its role in scaling industrial SAF infrastructure in the region.
SkyNRG’s CEO and Co-founder Maarten van Dijk stated that reaching this milestone allows the company to move from development to physical implementation of its own SAF production capacity, describing the project as a concrete contribution to aviation decarbonization.
The DSL-01 facility is positioned to contribute to Europe’s long-term objective of increasing domestic SAF supply, reducing dependency on fossil-based aviation fuels, and enabling airlines to comply with evolving blending mandates.
[1] A “substantial” award for Technip Energies is a contract award representing between €500 million and €1 billion of revenue. This award was recorded in Q1 2026 in the Project Delivery and Technology, Products & Services segments.
