Renewable Fuels for Milano Cortina 2026

As a Premium Partner of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, Eni is supplying renewable-based fuels and energy solutions to support Games operations while contributing to emissions reduction objectives aligned with its long-term decarbonization strategy.

Sustainability framework and energy transition context
Eni has set a target of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and has invested for decades in technologies aimed at reducing emissions from industrial processes and energy products. Within this framework, the company is applying its biofuel and circular feedstock capabilities to the Milano Cortina 2026 Games.

More than 90% of the fuels supplied by Eni, through its mobility and energy transition subsidiary Enilive, will be derived from renewable feedstocks. These fuels are intended to support mobility, electricity generation, and event logistics across multiple Olympic and Paralympic venues.

HVO diesel biofuel for transport and power generation
At its Venice and Gela biorefineries, Enilive produces hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) diesel primarily from waste and residue-based feedstocks, including used cooking oils, animal fats, and agri-food industry residues. The resulting fuel, marketed as HVOlution, is a pure HVO diesel not blended with fossil fuels and is compatible with diesel engines approved for HVO use.

For the Games, HVO diesel will be used both for vehicle fleets and for electricity generation. Approximately 250 generator sets of varying capacities will be fuelled with HVO, replacing conventional diesel in temporary and auxiliary power applications.

Based on lifecycle assessments that account for feedstock type and end use, the estimated greenhouse gas emission reductions associated with these fuels range between 70% and 80% compared with fossil diesel.

Cold-climate “arctic” HVO for high-altitude operations
For winter and high-altitude conditions, Enilive has produced a specialized “arctic” HVO diesel at its Venice biorefinery. This formulation is designed to remain fully operational at temperatures down to –28 °C, addressing performance requirements specific to alpine environments.

The arctic HVO diesel will be used to fuel buses transporting athletes, officials, and spectators, vehicles operated by the Milano Cortina 2026 Foundation, snow groomers for venue preparation, and generator sets supplying electricity at competition sites.

Bio-LPG for Olympic and Paralympic torches
In addition to fuels for mobility and power, Eni and its chemical subsidiary Versalis have contributed to the design and fueling of the Olympic and Paralympic torches. The torches are the first in Olympic history to receive ReMade® Class A certification for recycled material content.

The burner system of the torches is fuelled with bio-LPG produced at Enilive’s Gela biorefinery using 100% renewable feedstocks. Materials used in the torch handle include polymer components derived partly from bio-naphtha sourced from renewable raw materials, reducing reliance on fossil-based inputs.

Broader implications for large-scale events
The Milano Cortina 2026 initiative demonstrates how renewable fuels derived from waste and residue streams can be deployed at scale in complex, time-bound events requiring high reliability and performance. By integrating HVO diesel and bio-LPG into transport, power generation, and symbolic elements such as the Olympic flame, Eni is applying industrial decarbonization technologies in a real-world, high-visibility context.

These measures illustrate the potential role of advanced biofuels as transitional solutions for reducing emissions in sectors where electrification remains challenging, particularly in cold-climate and high-altitude operating conditions.
