How Verdande Extends Norne’s Competitive Edge in Subsea Tieback Development

Equinor partnered to quickly connect the 36-million-barrel Verdande field to the existing Norne FPSO, maximising resource recovery and value creation for the Norwegian continental shelf.

How Verdande Extends Norne’s Competitive Edge in Subsea Tieback Development

Production began on 2 December from Verdande, a subsea field in the Norwegian Sea that is tied back to the Norne FPSO. With an estimated 36 million barrels of recoverable oil, Verdande supports continued operations at Norne beyond 2030. The field demonstrates how fast, cost-efficient subsea tiebacks are becoming a strategic differentiator for both Equinor and the Norwegian continental shelf.

Accelerated Development Through Existing Infrastructure
Verdande reached production less than three years after the investment decision, reflecting a development model that leverages established offshore infrastructure. This approach lowers capital expenditure, reduces environmental footprints and speeds time to first oil. The project illustrates how smaller discoveries can be commercialized competitively by tying them back to existing assets such as Norne, which now receives hydrocarbons from six subsea fields including the recently started-up Andvare.

Extending Norne’s Lifespan and Regional Impact
By connecting Verdande to Norne via a new pipeline and three-well template, the partners have increased resource recovery while prolonging the value of the FPSO. Norne supports more than 900 full-time equivalents, and Verdande further strengthens activity at regional industrial hubs. Oil continues to be exported by shuttle tankers, while associated gas is routed through the Åsgard Transport system to Kårstø.

Local Deliveries and Supply Chain Value
The NOK 6 billion investment generated substantial ripple effects along the Norwegian coast. Norwegian suppliers provided subsea equipment, engineering services, fabrication work, FPSO modifications, pipeline assembly, installation operations, drilling services, and geological and operational planning. These activities span locations including Sandnessjøen, Harstad, Stjørdal, Moss, Tønsberg, Nesna, Stavanger, Vigra, and Haugesund, reflecting the broad industrial footprint tied to Verdande’s development.

Field Composition and Partnership
Verdande encompasses the Cape Vulture and Alve Nord East discoveries, proven in 2017 and 2020. The partnership is operated by Equinor Energy AS with participation from Petoro AS, DNO Norge AS, Aker BP ASA, Japex Norge AS and Orlen Upstream Norway AS. The field sits approximately seven kilometres north of Norne and about 200 kilometres from Sandnessjøen.

A Model for Future Subsea Tiebacks
As the Norwegian continental shelf evolves toward smaller, modular field developments, Verdande serves as an example of how optimized subsea tiebacks can differentiate operators through efficiency, sustainability and enhanced resource utilisation. The project reinforces the role of established hubs like Norne in enabling competitive, lower-emission offshore production well into the next decade.
